The Modern Olympics
The Olympics are often called the “Olympic Games” or just “The Games”. It is a grand multi sporting event that is grouped into Summer Olympics and Winter Olympics. These Olympic Games are held once in every four years – an Olympiad (the span of time between two Olympics). Until the year 1992, the Summer and the Winter Games were held in the same year however, since then it has changed and separated to being kept two years apart. An interest in reviving the forgotten Olympic Games after 393 A.D. was first seen by the renowned Greek poet – Panagiotis Soutsos who was then an editor of a famous newspaper. In his poem “Dialogue of the Dead” in 1833 he expressed his will to revive the long forgotten Olympics. His will to revive the ancient Olympic Games and his motivation to revive them made him find a way to refurbish the Panathinaiko Stadium for the revived Olympics in the years 1870 and 1875. This was noted in the newspapers of that time not only in Greece but in the whole of Europe. The International Olympic Committee was then founded by a French nobleman Monsieur Pierre Fredy, le Baron du Coubertin (the baron of Coubertin – a noted town in France). The first Olympic games were then held in Athens, Greece and for the first time in history a world wide sporting event which was based on the lines of the ancient Olympics was held, with a mascot, a flag etc and has been running successfully since then, consistently not only gaining speed with participants but with spectators, fans and followers as well. The Summer Olympic Games held last was in Athens in the year - 2004, and the most recent winter Olympics was held in Turin. The next Olympics are to be held in Beijing and are noted to comprise of a whopping 302 events within a span of 28 different sports. |
